Problematic Pornography Use Therapy Perth

Pornography use can become concerning when it feels difficult to control, causes distress or begins to interfere with relationships, work, daily responsibilities, sexual wellbeing or personal values. Some people use the term “porn addiction”, while others prefer problematic or compulsive pornography use. Therapy can focus on the person’s experience without requiring a particular label.

When might support be useful?

People seek help for many reasons. These may include repeated unsuccessful attempts to change pornography use, secrecy, conflict within a relationship, shame, reduced sexual satisfaction, difficulty being present during partnered sex, or using pornography to manage stress, loneliness or difficult emotions.

Pornography is not automatically harmful, and Emma’s role is not to judge what a client watches. Therapy explores whether the pattern is creating problems, what maintains it and what change would look like for that person or relationship.

A personalised approach may include identifying triggers, understanding the habit cycle, emotional-regulation and mindfulness skills, realistic goal setting, relapse planning, communication and intimacy work, and consideration of sexual expectations or relationship agreements. Couples or relationship therapy may be included when appropriate.

Claims that pornography directly causes every sexual or relationship difficulty are often too simplistic. Where erectile, ejaculation, mental-health or other health concerns are present, Emma may encourage consultation with a GP or another appropriate professional alongside therapy.

Appointments are confidential and available in Roleystone and online.
